PlayStation Mobile

PS5 was almost 2 years from launch. I found myself in the position of being asked to join the team at PlayStation and lead the visual design for the all new companion app under development. I needed to create a visual design system that felt like an extension of the console interface that worked for mobile.

What were our goals ?

Update the structure of the app to drive social interaction.

Streamline store purchases.

Modernize the visual presentation to align with modern trends and PS design.

Starting from Scratch

We started out by creating mood boards to help guide the conversations with design leadership and allow us to pull out elements for us to start creating concepts with.

Better Tools

To make sure this vision was achieved, I set out early one to organize and componentize the entire app experience. The consistency and familiarity of how experiences present is key to helping the user intuitively navigate with familiarity and ease.

Concepts

Early concepts were full of color and bold shapes. We were using creative freedom to help iterate quickly through the design process. Using these mockups we created dozens of variants to try and find new directions we could structure and present our content.

Launch & Reception

We launched on Oct 28th ahead of the PS5 launch. User reception was overwhelmingly positive and supportive of the changes and choices we made for the direction of the app.
